hidden meaning
In this drawing I brought attention to the third-eye by placing a starfish on the mermaid's forehead. I was studying reiki and learning about chakras during the time I took on the commission. The experience inspired me to incorporate more meaning in my artwork to reach my audience on a deeper level (not by bringing attention to the third-eye, but by putting mine to use, incorporating all of the details I considered when creating the work). The starfish was an expression of using those symbols and meanings consciously. It also passed as a decoration. This drawing was a gift... When I gift an original piece of artwork I sometimes incorporate a bow or ribbon directly in the image. There are two in this drawing, one for the mother and one for the daughter. I never used to tell anyone, I just did it. I also print the "G" in my signature as non-cursive which feels more personal to me. Pointing out both of these features you can easily tell I made this drawing as a gift! This was also the reason for the title. How to Order

About this drawing...
Knowing this image was a gift from a mother to her young daughter I was inspired to express that love in the artwork by depicting the mermaid cradling a baby seal.
Instead of illustrating the standard mermaid with a clam-shell top and single-fin tail I put more attention into the design of her clothes and anatomy, giving her an overall elongated, delicate and highly feminine appearance that I thought might work more believably in an underwater environment. At the same time I didn't want the mermaid to look too strange or frightening, so I kept her upper body very human and gave her a peaceful demeanor. Vertical Divider
