Title
Borrelia Koi
13x22 Pastel Pencil, Watercolor and Acrylic on Rives BFK Printmaking Paper
hidden meaning
Even though I designed this painting for someone else it turned out to be a very personal piece. During the time I was getting rolfed, and many years prior, I was trying to understand what was causing so much pain and fatigue in my body. This led me to try many different treatments, a few of them to combat possible Lyme Disease which included taking antibiotics, and later, other less mainstream methods. This was a long, miserable, and ultimately fruitless process, but I couldn't help incorporate my experience into the painting. I gave the koi a "bullseye" marking on its tail (which usually appears at the site of a bite when bitten by an infected tick) and based the shape of its body off a Lyme Disease-related bacteria...I can't remember the name of the co-infecting bacteria now, but I chose the shape of the bacteria over the Lyme spirochete because of the spirochete's corkscrew shape which didn't make for a natural-looking fish. The image of the bacteria, on the other hand, was very similar to an eel. I also named the painting "Borrelia Koi" after the Lyme spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, which is named after the scientist who identified it. I always planned to make more koi paintings in this style and I'm sure I will in the not too distant future, but my new ones will probably have a much different inspiration behind them! How to Order

About this drawing...
This was one of my first if not the first mixed media paintings I created. Looking back on the date I can't believe how much time has passed since 2011 when I made this in my senior year of high school.
I painted it for a woman who agreed to provide me with her health services in exchange for an original piece of art. She does a certain kind of deep massage called rolfing. It's painful but effective in loosening up stubborn muscles. She wanted me to draw something 'oceany', so I drew a fish that has hand-like fin structure representing her profession, and the moon which controls the tides. I incorporated some anatomical features (the teardrop-shaped eye pupil, and antennae-like fins) from my pet goramis, a kind of tropical fish. Vertical Divider
